Dear parents, pupils, governors and staff
I am delighted to be writing this letter of introduction to you all. As you will by now be aware I have been appointed as the new Principal – in fact, the school’s first-ever permanent Principal – with effect from this summer.
For this half term I have been in school one day a week as part of an induction programme, and after half term, I will be here more often prior to my full-time start in August. I hope this will give me the chance to meet all of you, talk about your hopes and aspirations for the school and outline my own plans.
My visits have so far been characterised by the warmest of welcomes and a great enthusiasm to take the school forward. I am highly impressed with the work here, the desire to put the pupils at the centre of everything we do, and the rich, balanced and rewarding education which brings out the best in each and every one of them.
While I have not worked in a Steiner school before, I am completely supportive of the Steiner curriculum and the school’s ethos. I have always worked to build holistic education opportunities and my aim is to develop young people who are motivated and skilled so that they leave school ready to make a difference in the world.
It is clear that RSSKL has had a challenging time recently and this has impacted on our reputation and confidence. My commitment is to put this firmly behind us and to move on in a positive way.
My aim is to preserve the best of what we already do – the rhythms and pattern of learning, the inter-connectivity of lessons and the nurture of each child. I would like to build on that to ensure that our learning has rigour, that the pace of work is brisk, without being rushed, and that each student is challenged and supported to achieve their fullest potential.
While being under the magnifying glass of OFSTED can cause staff and students to feel pressure, I firmly believe that by engaging with this process we will learn from it and come out stronger. I would like our exam results to go from good to great, our reputation to build in the community and beyond and our numbers to swell. These are challenging ambitions, but ones which I am confident we can achieve.
I very much look forward to meeting you all in coming months, and to leading the school in this next phase.
