TIME TO PLAY!
An evening with Kim Hunter – director of the film “Time to Play!”
Kings Langley Steiner Kindergarten – Tuesday 6th of November, 7.30-9.00 p.m.
Kim Hunter, Canadian Educator and recipient of the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Early Childhood Education, speaks about her concerns about the issues facing children and families in her film, Time to Play.
Hunter, from British Columbia, has presented the film and spoken at conferences, universities, parent groups, and professional development programmes for teachers as well as the general public during a 7-week tour in Canada.
She has been a Waldorf Early Childhood Educator for more than 20 years. Featured in the film are child development experts who speak to the difficulties and challenges that arise when children are not allowed enough free time to play, to move and are over-exposed to technology.
This is a “hot topic” at the moment as we see a rise in forest schools, nature programmes and a lot of research from all over the world about the hazards of technology for children – and even for adults. “We need to be sure that we are using the tools, not that the tools are using us,” says Hunter, “children – and most adults for that matter – don’t have the capacity to regulate screen use.”
The significance of time in nature and green spaces to provide some balance is becoming more recognized with a lot of current research supporting these activities.
Following the film, there will be a question and answer session. Time to Play is of interest to anyone but specifically directed at those spending time with young children – parents, grandparents, early childhood educators.
“I made Time to Play because I’m concerned about the changes I’ve seen in child development over the last 20 years,” says Ms. Hunter. “I hope to stimulate a cultural conversation that can change the way we relate to the early years of human development.”
Time to Play will be presented at the Rudolf Steiner School Kings Langley, Langley Hill, Kings Langley WD4 9HG on Tuesday 6th of November, 7.30-9.00 p.m. Donations welcome!
